You’ve been exercising faithfully, but you’re not seeing a dramatic weight loss. Right about now you’re asking yourself, “What’s the point?”

You may be using the wrong yardstick to measure your success. Rather than looking at the scale, cast an eye on how you look and feel.

You examined yourself in the mirror and noted all the parts of your body you wished were otherwise. When was the last time you took such a hard look? Have you noticed that your tummy is trimmer? That your arms jiggle less and your thighs are firmer? There’s a good chance that you’ve replaced fat with muscle without even knowing it. And because muscle tissue weighs more than fat, you’ve gained strength rather than losing weight.

Even more important is how you feel. When was the last time you took a fitness test? Take another one now and write the results in your personal database. Are there improvements in your strength, flexibility, and endurance? Does it take longer for you to reach your THR and less time to return to you RHR? These are all signs that increased activity is really paying fitness dividends.

What about your mood and self-image? Do you feel more able? More in command? Are there things you do regularly you never thought you’d do? Do you have more “get up and go”? Are you more involved in positive pursuits? Do you have more energy?

I’d be very surprised if the answer isn’t “Yes!” Being more active isn’t a temporary solution. It, a lifestyle choice. Keeping it up will keep you younger and healthier all the days of your life.
